CALIFORNIA - 1st time (Aug. 30th)

California is a strange place I tell you...So diverse that it could be a bunch of little countries next to one another. At first it looked like a continuation of the Arizona Desert, nothing more exciting for us to look at than what we had seen the day before. Because of that we were excited to find something new and more exciting on our way.

And then, we saw palm trees, right in front of Mountains. I don't know about in the US, but I can guarantee you that in France, you would never see palm trees surrounded by the Alps!

Before we stopped for lunch in Ruby's diner, we started encountering remnants of past fires along the road. Trees were black from the burn, and they seemed to just stand still as a reminder of how fragile nature is.

All of a sudden, in the middle of the steep mountains, we started seeing miles and miles of windmills; fields of them. It looked as though it ad been taken out from a sci-fi movie!

When we got closer to Los Angeles CA, we left our West road I-10 to get onto our new Northern direction road, I-5. On the way we saw the forest fires that seemed to be uncontrollable. At that point 3500 acres of forest had been destroyed. Many exits were closed. When you see how dry the ground is, it actually appears to be more like hay than grass, and when you know how hot it gets in the California Mountains, you understand why fires propagate so quickly.

I had no clue that California would offer so many kinds of beauties...From the butter colored mountains, to the plains, to the vineyards etc...amazing. But that radiator water sign is not exactly a good one, especially when you drive a civic, which drags a U-Haul. There had to be over a dozen people stopped on the side of the road with overworked engines! Well, we made it safe and sound without a problem by staying in second gear for a while. We indeed had good laughs that day about how my civic is powered by a miraculous force . GO CIVIC GO
