The next morning (August 27th), we woke up really early, and checked out on mapquest how long it would take us to walk to the Honda dealer. It said about 20 minutes. My dad and I then decided to just go ahead and walk, and wait for the car there. As we walked, the sky got darker and darker, and of course…it started raining! And then, what happened is a “you had to be there” kind of thing, but I have to tell you about it...
A bus stopped right next to us and the lady driver asked where we were going; she told us to get on the bus, she said she’d drop us off in front of the dealer, and that we did not even have to pay. All excited about avoiding getting soaked, we hopped on, huge smiles on our faces, thinking the day was gonna be a good day. Yes, well until the bus driver picked up her friend at the first stop, it was indeed a good day; after that it was just another yesterday! They talked and they talked and they talked, and when we got closer to the dealer I wondered why she did not stop, but figured she was going to make a turn soon enough. It seemed however that we were getting further and further away from the place. Then we reached the bus terminal. We thought, “well, she’s got a timetable to respect, she’s picking up those people and dropping us off on the way back”. Except that…we did not go back the same way we came. We saw Mobile dowtown, Mobile condos, Mobile ghettos, Mobile’s everything but the FREAKING HONDA DEALER. This lasted forever, and as my dad pointed out, it was like a nightmare, feeling like a hostage of that darn bus, lost in the middle of a city we knew nothing about. The only difference with a nightmare is that you can actually wake up!
Finally brave Matias decided to go ask the lady how long we had still until she dropped us of. She exclaimed, in a strong Southern Alabama accent: “Oh my goodness, I forgot ‘bout ya’ll”. Huh, believe it or not she completely forgot about us, and about the favor she wanted to do us originally. All in all, no joke, we were stuck in that stupid bus for 2 hours, from 9.35 am to 11.35. To make matters worse, we realized that we had both keys of the hotel, and wondered how we were going to make it back by noon, time of the checkout. Now, I did not mention that my mom was by herself at the hotel with Prince, the 20 lbs flea bag…she had no key to the hotel, no phone (and my dumb self did not take the hotel number with me), no key to the trailer parked on the lot. Forget it. I was dropped of at the Honda dealer, and the guys stayed on the bus to be dropped off at the hotel. I lucked out, my car was just ready when I got there. The guys were a little less lucky…the bus had dropped them off a bout 1 mile (1.6 km) away from the hotel, and since it was pouring out, they were soaked (socks and underwear included!!). I made it just 5 minutes until noon to the hotel, we threw everything in the U-haul, grabbed the fat kitty, and off we were to Louisiana! Pfff bye bye Alabama, not so sure I’ll be back.
I’m not kidding you, the rain stopped as soon as we reached Louisiana!
